Upgrading World Museum Entomology Facilities and Resources

A core principle of the Tanyptera Project is to improve access to the resources that support biological recording, reducing financial barriers and strengthening recording skills and capacity across the region. Through continued investment in World Museum entomology laboratory, survey equipment, and entomology library, recorders can use high-quality microscopes and imaging systems, borrow survey and identification equipment, and access specialist literature.

Tanyptera additions to World Museum entomology lab include:

  • Inspex 2 video microscope for teaching and research.
  • Dissecting video microscope set up for teaching demonstrations
  • Stackshot imaging suite for high quality publishable images.
  • 30 Compact Brunel microscopes for loan – to recorders, local records centres and remote workshops.
  • 16 high quality Olympus teaching microscopes and lighting.
  • 15 Scholar compound microscopes for workshops requiring higher levels of magnification.
  • 8 High back laboratory chairs.
  • Field equipment for loan to recorders and to support educational activities.
  • Lab equipment for DNA barcoding preparations such as micropippettes

The Entomology Library has been upgraded with:

  • Major new books for UK and European invertebrate identification.
  • Multiple copies of identification guides for use in workshops or for loan.
  • Subscriptions to six UK entomological recording journals.
